Do you offer classes or informal instruction on setting up, stocking, and maintaining a salt water aquarium? I'm a beginner and I want to do things right. I also want to make sure I don't take on more than I can handle. Thanks!

I have a 55 gallon freshwater tank and have gravel on the floor of the tank along with some bigger rocks and various decorations. What I am really wanting to do is make sure that I can have some planted plants in there as well for the health of the tank and my fish. Everything that I have seen has said to have some sort of substrate as well as maybe some sand to plant the plants. I've also seen the possibility of just keeping the plants in their pots that they come in when you buy them. Basically, I am just wanting your advice on what I should do, and also what could you guys do for the tank and at what price?
Thanks,
Gage Aker
Thanks for the question, Gage. As far as the question about the substrate for planted aquariums, I recommend a layered substrate. Some aquatic plants have strong enough roots to survive in simple gravel substrate, however they generally don't receive the nutrient load they need to thrive. Some aquatic plants are rhizome plants which do not require substrate, the can be attached to large rocks or driftwood. However, the vast majority of aquatic plants have fragile extending roots that require more complex substrates. I recommend a thin base layer of sand (max 1") covered by a layer of flourite or laterite (1'-1 1/2"), above the flourite level I generally add another layer of sand(1'-2"), finally top off with layer of the substrate of your choice that has the best aesthetic quality. I usually prefer larger grade natural gravel for the top layer. I do not recommend keeping most plants in their pots, they will soon become root bound in pots and will face problems once they become root bound.
